The tiny apartment felt smaller than usual. The ticking of the clock in the living room was deafening. John drummed his fingers on the countertop, the repetitive thudding a stark contrast to the quiet of the room. A snake. Maria wanted a snake.

The idea made his stomach twist. He visualized the enclosure, the feedings, the constant vigilance. He pictured himself having to deal with the inevitable escape. He wasn't designed for this.

Maria bounced into the kitchen, a smile playing on her lips. “It’s such a cool pet!” she exclaimed. John forced himself to smile back, but his jaw ached with the effort. He felt pinned down, trapped.
